HALLMARKING POLICY

Why do you need to hallmark?

As precious metals are rarely used in their purest form but are usually alloyed with other metals for workability, durability and wearability, it is not possible to detect the precious metal content of a piece of jewellery simply by sight or touch.

To ensure that the customers are getting the correct purity of precious metals in their jewellery, after 1973, it became a legal requirement for an Assay Office to hallmark articles containing precious metals if they are described as such.

A hallmark is a Government seal that is stamped on precious metal objects, such as jewellery or silverware. The purpose of a hallmark is to certify the metal purity of the item. Only a UK Government Assay Office can apply a hallmark. Testing precious metals for purity is called “assaying”, hence the name.

The Hallmarking Act 1973 states that pieces with the total weight of metal (excluding stones etc.) over 7.78g must be hallmarked to show they meet legal standards of purity. Note that pair of earrings are treated as individual items. Each earring will only need to be hallmarked if its individual weight is over threshold for the metal they are made of.

How does AVILIO London comply with the Hallmarking Policy?

Much of our jewellery collection weights less than 7.78g and thus does not require the Assay Office hallmark. Nonetheless, each and every piece bears the 925 stamp of finesse, plus our brand name. AVILIO items where the metals used weigh over 7.78 have all been hallmarked by London Assay Office located at Greville Street, London, EC1N 8SQ, such as our Zodiac Collection necklaces and Falling Leaves bracelets. We are confident that all of our handcrafted jewellery made by our artisans meets the quality standard of the Sterling Silver jewellery.

While hallmarking is possibly the oldest form of consumer guarantee for fine jewellery products you will find, we also provide you with a modern day promise to give you a full refund if your are not satisfied with the quality of our products (subject to our Exchange & Return Policy).

At AVILIO we place customer trust above everything all. It is our mission to to build a community of AVILIO jewellery lovers.
